6 Ways to Celebrate Lisbon’s Popular Saints Festival Without the Clichés

Lisbon in
June has a unique energy. The nights grow longer, and the city comes alive with
popular festivities and the arrival of summer.
Yet there is also a more sophisticated side to Lisbon that deserves to be
discovered beyond the predictable celebrations.
Far from the
crowded street
parties, June can also be a time for cultural experiences, family
activities, dinners, and open-air concerts where tradition remains present but
is reinterpreted in a contemporary way.
1 – Between Tradition and Culture
Lisbon Museum – Saint Anthony
Saint Anthony, Lisbon’s patron saint and the saint of marriage, is the central figure of the Popular Saints Festivities. In the heart of Alfama, just a few steps from Lisbon Cathedral, the Lisbon Museum – Saint Anthony offers visitors a closer look at his history and his deep connection to the city.
After your
visit, it is worth exploring the surrounding streets and admiring the historic
façades, where religious tradition, popular celebration, and Lisbon’s identity
come together.
- Location: Largo de Santo António da Sé, 22
- Opening hours (19 May to 30 June): Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; 1 and 8 June, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Casa Fernando Pessoa
Few people know that Fernando Pessoa was born on 13 June, Saint Anthony’s Day. Fernando Pessoa Casa brings together memory, literary creation, and reading. Through manuscripts, personal belongings, and a library dedicated to world poetry, visitors can explore an exhibition spread across three floors, devoted to the poet’s life and work.
To mark
Fernando Pessoa’s birthday, a special cultural programme takes place on 13
June, including guided tours and free admission.
- Location: Rua Coelho da Rocha, 16–18
- Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

European Literature Night
This year, the celebration of European literature joins Lisbon’s Festivities. Taking place on 6 June, the literary evening features ten staged reading sessions between 7:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. in public and private venues across the parish of Santo António. Admission is free.

2 – Creative Family Experiences
June is a particularly rich month for activities designed for all ages, transforming the city into a place of discovery and shared creativity.
Several museums and cultural institutions organise workshops and family activities inspired by the traditions of the Popular Saints Festivities.

Designed for children and families, this activity encourages imagination, and every creation becomes a small story to take home.

3 – A Classical Pause
Near Avenida da Liberdade, home to the Popular Marches parade, the Portuguese Cinematheque – Cinema Museum offers an unexpected retreat. With a programme combining classic films and auteur cinema, it also features a charming terrace perfect for relaxing moments.
Here, visitors can enjoy a calmer, more cinematic, and timeless side of Lisbon.

4 – Experiencing Lisbon Through Gastronomy
Tradition is also served at the table. One of the most authentic ways to discover the city is through its flavours, recipes, and culinary rituals passed down through generations.
From hands-on
experiences to spaces dedicated to sharing culinary knowledge, Lisbon can be
explored beyond the typical flavours associated with the Popular Saints
celebrations.
Cooking Lisbon
Cooking Lisbon offers gastronomic experiences that combine cooking and social interaction. During practical and relaxed sessions, participants explore traditional Portuguese recipes while learning about the history and ingredients that shape the country’s culinary identity.
- Location: Rua Bernardim Ribeiro, 9
Time Out Academy
The cooking school at Time Out Market hosts workshops and culinary experiences led by Chef Miguel Mesquita and his team, in a dynamic and informal setting within Mercado da Ribeira.
- Location: Avenida 24 de Julho
5 – Sunset with a View Over the City
Few experiences are more quintessential in Lisbon than ending the day on a terrace overlooking the city’s hills.
BAHR & Terrace, located at Bairro Alto Hotel, reinterprets tradition through contemporary Portuguese cuisine marked by elegance and authenticity. The views over Chiado and the Tagus River are truly breathtaking.
- Location: Praça Luís de Camões, 2

6 – Open-Air Concerts and Summer Nights
In June, open-air concerts become increasingly frequent, and events continue well into the night. From jazz and classical music to independent projects and summer festivals, this is an opportunity to enjoy Lisbon’s vibrant atmosphere away from the most obvious tourist circuits.
Venues such
as Coliseu dos
Recreios, the Belém Cultural
Centre, and Gulbenkian Music
offer particularly appealing programmes during this time of year.
Between
culture, gastronomy, and new perspectives on the city, there is still much more
to discover. The journey continues elsewhere and at a different pace in "Romanticism
in Lisbon: The City as Inspiration”.
