Things to do
Carioca: Want to choose the beans for your coffee?
For coffee lovers, the challenge is to choose the best bean in the Carioca store. Some people give more importance to the aroma, acidity or body… but best of all is to drink a coffee every day, as if it was the first time.
If you want an espresso in Lisbon you would ask for "bica” (bee-kah). Bica is one of the biggest tasting pleasures in Portugal and, for those who are visiting the capital, will certainly have in the itinerary the indication to order one at the counter of a cafe or pastry shop.
Opened since 1936
Carioca was founded 83 years ago by Isidoro Teixeira. It was in the family until 1993 and was eventually bought by Cafés Negrita, which even created a special lot for the Carioca store.
On the facade of the store there are two windows with red tones and framed by black marble. Inside, you will find scales, traditional mills and a large grinding machine with grinding wheels of stone.
Be seduced by the aromas of coffee, teas and chocolates
Did you know that the only tea produced in Europe is from Azores? In Carioca you can find Gorreana green tea. In addition to this classic, the store has about 80 varieties of teas, such as China Rose.
If you want the full "menu”, take a look through the shelves of the wood cabinets with chocolates, candies and cookies. Teas and coffees can be purchased by weight. If you have any questions, always count on a wise and attentive service.
