In December, Lisbon transforms into a luminous map. Thousands of lights cover avenues and squares, creating a festive atmosphere that invites you to stroll around the city.
Among the must-see stops are:
- Armazéns do Chiado – In the heart of Chiado, the lights highlight the historic architecture of the building, making it a mandatory stop for Christmas shopping or simply admiring the decorations.
- Avenida da Liberdade – Monumental illuminations and elegant shop windows brighten the heart of the city.
- Praça do Comércio – With an impressive Christmas tree around 30 metres tall and a festive riverside setting by the Tejo river, it is one of the most iconic spots during the festive season.

Portugal has a long-standing nativity scene tradition, and Lisbon is no exception. For children and adults, it’s a fun way to explore the history and artistry of this cultural heritage.
Nativity Scene at Basílica da Estrela
Considered one of the most impressive nativity scenes in the country, it is a true masterpiece by 18th-century sculptor Machado de Castro. Composed of more than 400 cork and terracotta figures, it recreates biblical and everyday scenes with extraordinary detail.
Alenquer Nativity Village
Less than an hour from Lisbon, Alenquer transforms every year into the iconic "Nativity Village”. It is one of the biggest and most emblematic nativity displays in Portugal, with large-scale figures, festive lighting and activities that enchant both children and adults.

Visit markets and fairs

Wonderland

Located in Parque Eduardo VII, it is a true Christmas amusement park. You’ll find a giant Ferris wheel with panoramic views over the city, classic carousels, an ice rink and a market selling artisan products. There are also shows and children’s entertainment. Entry is free.

Rossio Christmas Market
Dozens of wooden stalls offer crafts, traditional sweets and original gift ideas. Entry is free and the market has a cultural programme for all ages, including live performances, Santa’s House, the Christmas Train through Baixa Pombalina and much more, turning Rossio into a scene worthy of the North Pole.

Avenidas Novas Christmas Market
Campo Pequeno once again opens its doors to the true Christmas spirit. This market stands out for its selection of local products, from jewellery and ceramics to fashion and accessories. A complete experience for the whole family.

Enjoy Christmas concerts

In December, the city’s cultural calendar is filled with concerts. The Christmas
Festivities take place from 5 to 19 December, with seven free
performances in historic churches and landmarks such as Cinema São Jorge and
the National Pantheon.
Taste traditional Christmas treats

No Christmas outing is complete without a sweet or a warm drink to comfort you on colder days.
