Walking in Lisbon: the best tours

Walking through Lisbon is the best way to get to know and discover the most beautiful and secret charms of this magnificent city. If you like to walk calmly, feel the life of each place you pass by and observe unique details, we have the best suggestions of tours to do in the capital. Enjoy Lisbon's sun, explore its streets and, if you need to stop and rest, have a snack in some of Lisbon's best terraces. Let's go?

Travel back in time while discovering Alfama

Start your tour at the Sé de Lisboa, the oldest church in the city and a monument with enormous historical value that is worth knowing. From there, follow the tram line passing by the Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol viewpoints, which offer stunning views of the city that overlooks the river.
The best way to get to know Alfama is to lose yourself in its narrow, labyrinthine streets, among buildings with colourful doors and tiled walls. Alfama transports visitors to another time and slows down the pace of those who pass through. Go up to Castelo de São Jorge while contemplating every detail of this precious neighborhood. Up there, inside the fortification, you'll have the best panoramic view of Lisbon waiting for you.
On the way down, we recommend that you head towards the Fado Museum, where you'll find restaurant areas and a programme that has Fado as the protagonist.

From the Tagus River to the São Roque hill

The Praça do Comércio is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and this is where we will start our tour. Before we start, take time to observe the river, the Cais das Colunas and take the opportunity to go to the top of the Rua Augusta Arch which offers a unique view of the Tagus River and the square. Walk down Rua Augusta until the emblematic Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio), while observing the Pombaline architecture of the buildings. In this area, you will also find the iconic D. Maria II National Theatre and Rossio Station. Walk towards Praça Luís de Camões, discovering the elegant Chiado neighbourhood and the Bertrand bookshop, the oldest in the world in operation. Take a break to rest in the historic café "A Brasileira", the favourite place of the poet Fernando Pessoa, who still accompanies visitors with his "presence". To recharge your batteries, we suggest you visit the Bairro Alto Hotel pastry shop and taste the various homemade specialties while enjoying a panoramic view of Praça Luís de Camões.
If you still have the strength and desire to explore further, we recommend you go up to the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, where you will have the privilege of enjoying one of the most beautiful views of Lisbon. To return to your starting point, there are several options, but we suggest you take the Elevador da Glória, or walk to Largo do Carmo, the site of the 25th April Revolution in 1974, and take the picturesque Elevador de Santa Justa

Belém: harmony between old and new

Belém is one of the most popular areas for those visiting Lisbon, as it has a wide variety of historical monuments of great importance and allows you to enjoy pleasant walks along the Tagus River. Here you can see impressive Manueline architecture buildings such as the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, which you cannot miss.
If you're looking for the real Belém pastry factory, you've come to the right place. Founded in 1837, this confectionery still keeps the secret recipe for the delicious delicacies and is the right place to take a break to rest.
In Belém you will find buildings of ancient architecture, but also contemporary architecture, such as the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology), the Belém Cultural Center and the National Coach Museum. If you have time, visit some of these museums, as they have collections that you will enjoy discovering.
At the end of the day, enjoy an impressive sunset as you walk along the Tagus River.

Follow our suggestions for walking tours and get to know the best of Lisbon. If you are on holiday in the city, enjoy and discover Sintra and Cascais, two stunning villages located just 30 minutes from Lisbon.
