Lisbon in 2 days: day 1

Take a stroll downtown

Begin your visit at one of the most beautiful and emblematic squares in the city: Terreiro do Paço (or Praça do Comércio – Commerce Square). Here you will find Cais das Colunas, the renown "noble entrance to Lisbon”, and Arco da Rua Augusta (Rua Augusta’s Arch) which offers a unique view over the city and the Tejo river. Take the time to observe the "pombalino” style of the buildings, an architectural style named after Marquês de Pombal, who was responsible for rebuilding the city after the earthquake in 1755.

Important landmarks nearby:
  • Praça Dom Pedro IV
  • Teatro Nacional D.Maria II
  • Elevador de Santa Justa
  • Praça Luís de Camões
  • Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea
  • Praça da Figueira

Walk up to Alfama or step aboard the "28” tram

Alfama is one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, famous for its singular beauty and typical casas de fado (fado houses). Make sure to spend some time walking its narrow streets, observing the intricate tiles on the buildings, as you make your way to Castelo de São Jorge (São Jorge’s Castle) to enjoy some of the best views in the city. If you don’t mind a longer walk, we suggest you stroll up to Alfama from downtown Lisbon, passing by Sé de Lisboa (Lisbon Cathedral), Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro das Portas do Sol, viewpoints where you may rest and gaze upon an amazing view over Alfama and the Tejo. If you’d rather use public transport, step aboard the iconic 28 tram at Praça da Figueira and hop off at Largo das Portas do Sol, just by the viewpoint.

Important landmarks nearby:
  • Museu do Fado
  • Museu do Aljube
  • Sé de Lisboa
  • Museu de Lisboa – Teatro Romano
  • Miradouro Portas do Sol
  • Castelo de São Jorge

Lisbon in 2 days: day 2

A day to enjoy Belém and the Tejo

Visit the impressive Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a symbol of Portuguese power and wealth during the Discoveries, walk by the river and view the collections of some of the most important museums in Lisbon. Here you will also find several options to take a wonderful boat trip across Tejo and enjoy Lisbon from a new perspective. For a final flourish, visit MAAT (Art, Architecture and Technology Museum) and make your way right to the top, to enjoy a magnificent sunset. If you decide to venture across the river, take the opportunity to discover some of the best river’s edge restaurants, in Cacilhas.
