Why Belém, in Lisbon, is a must-visit spot?

Belém, in Lisbon, is one of the most visited places of the capital. And it is very interesting to realize that there are two types of people: the curious ones, with a huge willingness to visit the monuments, and those who just want to relax and spend quiet and peaceful moments with family and friends in the gardens or by the river.

And Belém can easily offer these two different experiences to its visitors, as it includes a historical and a leisure area, both very sought by thousands of people every year.

If you are in Lisbon, or if you want to visit the city very soon, come to Belém and explore its wonders. Here are some of them:

The wonders of Belém, in Lisbon

Padrão dos Descobrimentos
  • Torre de Belém
Built between 1514 and 1520, in the reign of Manuel I, it is one of the most important monuments of the capital and a fundamental piece of Lisbon’s heritage. It’s part of the Tagus estuary defence system and it's strongly recognized as a cultural reference of the country, representing the exchange with other civilisations and cultures.

  • Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
Located in one of the noblest areas of the capital, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a historical landmark of the 16th-century architecture in Portugal. It's widely recognized as being one of the symbols of the power and wealth of Portuguese people during the Age of Discovery. Today, the monument still preserves its structures that largely contributes to its international recognition and appreciation.

  • Padrão dos Descobrimentos
Another important piece of the heart of Belém, in Lisbon. Padrão dos Descobrimentos (or Monument to the Discoveries) represents the Age of Discovery of the Portuguese people. It was precisely here where the Portuguese ships used to depart to explore and conquer new oriental cultures during the 15th and 16th centuries.

  • Centro Cultural de Belém
The Centro Cultural de Belém is recognized as one of the biggest landmarks, both national and international, and a jewelry of the Portuguese culture since it is the venue cultural events, as well as for every type of institutional and corporate events. CCB was also created to be an "open city” with restaurants, terraces, bars,  gardens and plaza that can be made available for the use of the visitors.

Although its purpose is to provide clinical care of excellence and developing programmes of advanced biomedical research and scientific discoveries, it is an excellent spot with a breathtaking view, ideal for watching the sunset.
